Miller, Ph.D., (1995) motivational interviewing (MI) is " A directive, client-centred counselling style for eliciting behaviour change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence".

So, what does that mean?

In motivational interviewing (MI), the examination and resolution of the internal conflict between two courses of action (ambivalence) is the central purpose, and the counsellor deliberately does this to achieve the goal.

What is the therapist's role?

* Aim to understand the individual's internal frame of mind by using reflective listening or acute empathy therapy popularised by Rogers in the year 1951.
* Receiving acceptance and affirmations from the individual itself.
* Evoking the individual and then reinforcing his/her self motivation. The aim is to recognise the individual's problems, understanding their desire and intentions for change and finally the actual effort put by them to achieve these changes.
* Monitoring the client's eagerness to change and the degree of such readiness.
* Constantly affirmation of the client's person choices and interests.

How does MI differ from other models of therapy?

When we compare motivational interviewing (MI) with completely nondirective models of psychology counselling, it will be seen that it is a more focused and goal-directed application.

Efficacy

According to Burke, Arkowitz and Menchola in the Journal of Counselling and Clinical Psychology (2003, Vol. 71, No. 5, 843-861), in clinical trials Motivational Interviewing (MI) has shown improvements in the client base of between 51% and 56% in both substance use reduction and abstinence.

ATI is a leading Psychology Institute in Ireland specialised in providing Counselling Psychotherapy Training. To be an effective Therapist it is vital that you acquire the correct skills and techniques but without the human personal qualities needed you will not develop as a rounded professional.

The following are some of the qualities that are vital if one is to succeed in this profession.

Tolerance:
Counsellors need tolerance and a measure of self acceptance if they are going to be able to show it to others. Counsellors who like things to be neat and tidy will flounder, as people and personal problems do not usually fit into neat boxes. Clients and their behavior can challenge our own morals, attitudes and beliefs systems. It can be very tempting for the unaware therapist to make evaluations and judgments on the client as much as they attempt not to. The client will pick this up as time goes on the relationship can end up being just another destructive one for the client.

The lack of structure and clarity that some client’s issues will bring to the session can be very confusing and frustrating for the therapist. It may not be clear what the client needs. The client’s issues can be so overwhelming that it is hard to know where to start and it might not be clear that you are on the right path at any given time. On the other hand we may be very clear that we are on the right path and the client is telling us that they feel lost and that the therapy is going nowhere.

Architects, Artist, Carpenters and other creative professionals will see the end result of their work and feel satisfied with what they have achieved. Counselling can also be very rewarding when you see your client gain more control of their lives and move on. However counselling is full of ambiguity and the perfectionist who likes matters to be unambiguous will have a frustrating time.

Counsellors need to be fairly balanced individuals, sufficiently relaxed in their own skin and able to tolerate their own contradictions, ambivalences and inner conflicts, not to have them all dealt with but to at least be aware of them.

Self Knowledge:
Before you can embark on listening to others it is important that you learn to listen to yourself. This learning curve starts with developing your listening skills.

Self Care:
Counselling can be very demanding on the therapist. Clients will discharge a lot of negative emotion in the therapist and it is vital that the therapist has a support network in which to off load these emotions otherwise they can be toxic and cause the therapist to burnout out. All counselors are required to be in ongoing supervision do best advised to be attending their own therapist on a regular basis.

Role of Therapeutic Relationship in Counselling & Psychotherapy

One of the most important aspects of training to be a counsellor or psychotherapist is the establishment of sound therapeutic relationship, without this no therapy can take place.

Recent researches and the experience of psychotherapy practitioners suggest that no single psychotherapy or counselling approach is more effective than any other approach, every process has something to contribute.

It is the nature of the issues that the client is experiencing and the personality of the client that require a particular approach. Increasingly Therapists are required to be flexible and responsive to deliver psychotherapy to the client within the particular circumstances. According to the research, the therapeutic relationship is the key for the success of the therapy.

Training for counsellor must encompass combined focus on the therapeutic relationship with a sound and coherent theoretical basis that can be flexible and responsive to client needs.

Dangers of diagnosis

There can be huge pressure on the counsellor to diagnose the issues that the client brings. The client and possibly the referrer or the concerned person will want to get to the bottom of the problem quickly and the temptation arises to proceed along a path of brief, solution focused therapy for a period of 6 to 8 weeks. This intervention might sound very logical and scientific but it has no bearing on the reality of the work involved in psychotherapy.

There is no doubt that it is vital to have a range of hypotheses regarding the treatment options and many conditions such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar and major affective disorders or degenerative diseases diagnosis will need a full psychiatric evaluation but in the everyday counselling of less severely impaired individuals diagnosis can be counterproductive.

Counselling is fundamentally a process whereby the therapist attempts to know the client as fully as possible. A diagnosis can be extremely limiting and hamper the development of the relationship, the temptation can be to focus on the condition and resist or avoid the intensity of relating to the other person in a very human congruent manner. If we follow a diagnosis we can also begin to relate to the person as the "condition" i.e. if they are an "addict" or a borderline this might serve to perpetuate these very conditions. It is not uncommon for iatrogenic influence to shape clinical outcomes in the medical field.

Therapy by its nature is a very subjective experience which highlights the need for ongoing clinical supervision. There are a variety of models and schools of thought regarding the best form of supervision. These models and schools of thought are frequently related to the theoretical orientation of the supervisor. These different philosophies can create a dynamic tension within supervision. This dynamic needs to be both supportive and challenging. The style of the supervisor can occur within a spectrum ranging from highly didactic and directional to highly exploratory and relational.

The supervisor engages the trainee Therapist in an examination of the process of psychotherapy and also an examination of themselves. Good Supervision needs to be non-directive with some form of didactic teaching taking place also. The student is encouraged to express feelings about, and associations to what the client is presenting. The parallel process that occurs in the client relationship and the supervisory relationship will also be addressed for deeper insight. The main aim should be for the therapist to explore transferences and counter transferences so as to gain insight into any unconscious conflicts that might be impeding their work or development.

Counselling Psychotherapy as a career

In the last number of years there has been increasing recognition of the important role Counseling and Psychotherapy plays in the mental health arena. This has resulted in an increasing demand for well trained professionals.

Standardised regulation for Counselling and Psychotherapy is now coming on stream and thankfully this profession will be well regulated going into the future. This will mean that the academic requirements to become a Counsellor or Psychotherapist will be set at a minimum degree level.

This presents a challenge for the Course Designers and Accrediting Bodies as they are asked to find a fit between the academic components of theory and practice with the personal developments needs of the student. Personal development is difficult to evaluate and set time limits on, however it does need to be assessed and this is usually done on the course by the experiential groupwork facilitator and also in clinical supervision.

The core training aspects of a recognized degree should be: Self exploration, Supervised Therapeutic work with clients, the development of Counselling Skills, Counselling theory, Research reports, Case Studies and Process Reports. The best courses also have written and oral exams.

It is important to note that the training can be stressful as past or present issues will be thrown up and it can be daunting to have to deal with these while also dealing with the normal stresses of everyday life. This is where the support of the trainees personal therapist is important as he/she will provide a safe space to step back and look at these issues objectively. This relationship also gives the trainee an understanding of what it is like to be in the clients chair and to experience the vulnerability that the client feels.

Sitting face to face with someone who is going through a life crisis is a huge challenge and responsibility. An experienced supervisor is a key asset for the trainee and should be visited for at least one session for every 5 client hours.

There are many different theoretical orientations within the Counselling and Psychotherapy field, indeed it is hard to get agreement within the profession about what the difference is between a counselor and a psychotherapist. Counselling is primarily about dealing with what is conscious, ie working with the clients presenting issues. This could be a relationship issue, an addiction problem, or work related issue such as bullying. In other words the issue is known to the client and is affecting them in the here and now.

Psychotherapy is concerned with what is unconscious and usually involves more long term treatment. The client might present confused about repeating destructive patterns in their life which might not be evident on a conscious level, this might involve the client having to revisit past issues of trauma which can be very distressing. This type of therapy requires a very experience therapist trained to Masters Degree Level.

As can be seen from the above counselling training is a very serious endeavor, however it can also be a very enriching and fun experience as you get to know other class members on a very deep and intimate level, new skills are acquired which build the trainees self esteem and confidence.

Psychology Degree Counselling - What to Look for in a Bachelors Program?

Psychology is a field of study that has gained enormous popularity in almost every part of the world in last number of years. Obtaining a Counselling and Psychology degree offers plenty of diverse employment opportunities for example colleges, universities, public-sector organizations or market research firms as well as private practice. Depending upon aptitude and interest you can specialize in the various fields of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

In recent times, there has been an increasing demand for psychologists in almost every sector and as a result many colleges and institutes are offering psychology degrees and counselling degrees at graduate level. Besides this, many online schools have also started offering online bachelor degrees in psychology. Consequently you must be very careful about selecting any of these programs. Here are few important guidelines that you need to look for while selecting a bachelor program in Counselling and Psychotherapy:

Cost of a program - Find out how much the course is going to cost you. Not just for one year but for the full course if you are considering a degree course. Take into account the cost of books and any other expenses and budget for them. Beware if courses advertised seem to be excessively cheap. Make sure you get what you pay for.

Faculty base - You need to know that the standard of those who will be teaching you is up to the standard that you would expect of a top notch educational facility.

Curriculum - Curriculum is vitally important. The curriculum must be acceptable to the accrediting agency in the jurisdiction in which you are studying. In the case of Counselling and Psychotherapy topics must include such subjects as: Counselling Theory, Therapeutic Intervention Strategies, Client / Counsellor Relationships, Work Experience and many others. Choose an institution that will provide you with all the information about the curriculum before you commit to the course and you can rest assured that the curriculum provided will always meet the requirements of the course.

Accreditation of a school - In any college or university, there are different types of accreditation, but the most important one is regional accreditation. These are the one’s that are recognized by the government and by employers. In Ireland HETAC and FETAC are the recognized accreditors in conjunction with recognized universities, colleges and Institutes.

A career in psychology is really exciting and rewarding. However, in order to gain the real benefit of psychology degree, you must be able to select a proper program provided by various universities or colleges. Following these easy steps as mentioned above can actually help you in enjoying a great program that may further lead you to make a great career in psychology.

Careers in Psychology : What Courses Are Needed to Become a Psychologist?

Amazing video based on What Courses Are Needed to Become a Psychologist.

Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ia9s6s-q7X4

Making a Career in Child Psychology

<img style="float:left;
